TGA Approval Status in 2026
Wegovy has two TGA approvals in Australia as of mid-2026:
1. Chronic weight management (approved 2022): For adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related comorbidity (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease).
2. MASH liver disease (provisional approval, April 2026): For adults with non-cirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (stages F2–F3). This is the first GLP-1 medication approved in Australia specifically for liver disease treatment.
Wegovy injection (semaglutide 2.4mg weekly) is TGA approved in Australia for chronic weight management and is available at Australian pharmacies with a private prescription.
Who Can Get Wegovy in Australia?
Your GP or specialist must confirm you meet one of the following criteria:
For weight management:
- BMI 30 or higher, or
- BMI 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition
For MASH liver disease:
- Confirmed MASH with liver fibrosis at stage F2 or F3
- Non-cirrhotic liver (not F4)
- Prescribed by or in consultation with a hepatologist or gastroenterologist
A telehealth consultation with an AHPRA-registered prescriber is a valid pathway to Wegovy for the weight management indication. The MASH indication typically requires specialist involvement.
What Wegovy Costs in Australia
Wegovy is not yet broadly PBS-subsidised. Most Australians pay the full private price:

PBS subsidy: The PBAC recommended PBS listing in December 2025 for adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity (BMI 35+, or 32.5+ for Asian, Aboriginal, or Torres Strait Islander Australians). Formal listing awaits government price negotiations with Novo Nordisk. Once listed, the cost reduces to $31.60 per prescription ($7.70 concession).
Where to Get Wegovy in Australia
Wegovy is dispensed at Australian community pharmacies on private prescription. It requires refrigeration and cold-chain delivery. Options include:
- Your local pharmacy with a prescription from your GP or specialist
- Telehealth services with AHPRA-registered prescribers who can prescribe and arrange pharmacy delivery
- Some hospital outpatient pharmacies for MASH-indicated prescriptions
Do not use compounded semaglutide. The TGA has warned against unapproved compounded semaglutide products. Legitimate Wegovy is manufactured by Novo Nordisk with full TGA regulatory oversight. Compounded versions have not undergone the same safety and efficacy testing.
Wegovy and Liver Disease — The April 2026 Development
The most significant development for Wegovy in Australia in 2026 is the new liver disease indication. The TGA approved semaglutide (Wegovy) for adults with non-cirrhotic MASH and moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (stages F2 to F3), based on evidence showing improvements in liver inflammation and scarring.
This means Wegovy is now a liver disease treatment — not just a weight loss medication — in Australia. For patients with confirmed MASH who have been told they have significant liver scarring, Wegovy is now a legitimate first-line pharmacological treatment under Australian regulatory approval.

Is the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) available in Australia?
The Wegovy pill was FDA approved in the US in December 2025 and is not yet available in Australia. Novo Nordisk has not yet lodged a TGA application for the oral form.
